Colorway synopsis:
One of the biggest ironies in the 2018 “Suspiria” is that while it’s dangerous outside in 1977 divided Berlin – due to bombings, robberies, and kidnappings that were happening on the streets at the time, due to post-WWII terror groups, like the Red Army Faction (“RAF,” mentioned in the film) – it is a safer place to be than inside the Helena Marko Dance Studio, where there is a an ominous force menacing it’s own dance troupe. The dance company is actually located right next to the Berlin wall, and you can see it many times throughout the film.
Luca Guadagnino’s intentional use of setting his version of Suspiria in 1977 (the year that the original “Suspiria” came out), during this heated time in Berlin, is a grisly complement to the disturbing deeds that are happening within the walls of the dance studio. While the wintery exterior isn’t explicitly green, the overall tones of West Berlin depicted in this film (like when the dancers go out for lunch or dinner, or when psychotherapist Josef Klemperer walks home) have brisk emerald green, gemstone hues that somehow feel secure, refreshing, and comforting compared to the wicked rumors running throughout the studio.
