Colorway synopsis:
The centerpiece of the 2018 “Suspiria” is the dance called “Volk,” Madame Blanc’s masterpiece. Volk, in German, literally translates to “people.” It is the dance that Susie vaults her way into performing the lead role of, “the protagonist,” despite being a brand new member to the dance troupe.
“Volk” is visceral and shuddering - with harsh, loud movements of the body. The dancers wear nude colored undergarments and long red ropes dangling from their limbs, meant to express the sense of being tied up.
This dance itself is inspired by Les Médusés, choreographed by Belgian and French choreographer Damien Jalet. In his version, the dancers wear white ropes instead of red, as depicted in the “Volk” scene of this Suspiria.
One of the most enjoyable things about Luca Guadagnino’s “Suspiria,” is watching Dakota Johnson’s performance of Susie. In the beginning, she arrives at the Helena Markos Dance Academy shy and heartfelt, showing camaraderie to her dance mates. As the film unravels, Susie’s relationship with Madame Blanc becomes somewhat sexually charged and her dancing continues to improve by the minute. She is always evolving, taking the viewer for a ride as her character overwhelms the dance studio with her dark, diverting, dominant presence.
“Volk” is also an homage to Thom Yorke’s stunning job with creating the score/soundtrack for this 2018 Suspiria. Sometimes I listen to it while focusing on something - like doing these write ups!
